What is medical cannabis?
The whole plant or specific compounds are used worldwide and throughout history to treat many health conditions. It is essentially the same product as recreational cannabis, except that it is applied for medical purposes.
Anecdotal evidence supports that cannabis can help treat several health conditions including: pain, appetite loss, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, muscle spasms, nausea, and more.
Need for Research
There is an unmet need for evidence-back scientific research to confirm the health benefits of cannabis.
CBD in Treatment
The strongest scientific evidence is for CBD’s effectiveness in treating epilepsy amongst children, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which usually do not respond to antiseizure medications. Epidiolex, which contains CBD, is the first cannabis-derived medicine approved by the FDA for these conditions.
